Metallic Catalyst
The conversions take place as the exhaust gas passes through a metallic substrate coated with precious metal which is packaged into a robust stainless steel housing.  Catalytic action commences when the exhaust gas temperture entering the purifier reaches approximately 200^oC.  The conversion rate is a function of temperature with maximum efficiency achieved when the engine is operating at full load.
